Introduction: The Retro Review Series

Here at Audio Appraisal, I aim to produce content that is interesting to you, the readers. Audio appraisal reviews offer an unbiased, honest overview of a product, written from the point of view of the user. These reviews are intended to help you make an informed decision as to whether a particular product is right for you.

However, I realise that not everybody has the means to purchase new, often expensive audio equipment. And, many readers, such as myself, have a keen interest in older technology – the equipment of yesterday that paved the way for today’s products.

Allow me to introduce the Audio Appraisal ‘Retro Review’ section – a section dedicated to yesterday’s technology. Being something of an electronics enthusiast, I frequently collect, restore and refurbish old hi-fi equipment. I’ve decided to showcase some of the more interesting pieces here for your enjoyment. Whether it’s a vintage tape deck, an obscure turntable, or an interesting pair of speakers – if you’re a fan of older technology, there will be something for you here.

There may also be some technical information, and handy servicing/repair hints along the way. Keep your eyes pealed for the first instalment – and until then…

An avid vinyl collector and coffee addict, I can often be found at a workbench tinkering with a faulty electronic device, tweaking a turntable to extract the last bit of detail from those tiny grooves in the plastic stuff, or relaxing in front of the hi-fi with a good album.
